Partial Hospitalization Program in Dallas
Riverwalk Ranch’s Partial Hospitalization Program for Drug Rehabilitation is a way for individuals to receive intensive treatment for their drug and alcohol addictions without having to live at a treatment center.
Our Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Dallas has helped many people recover from addiction. Though PHP is not our most popular program, it may be the right fit for you — depending on your unique situation.
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?
Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) — sometimes referred to as “day programs” — provide a level of care similar to an inpatient program. Unlike the 24/7 care seen in inpatient treatment, PHPs are typically 3-5 days a week, 4-6 hours a day. Programs may be customized to accommodate a looser or tighter schedule that better fits your needs.
PHP is a step down from a full inpatient program and a level up in care from an intensive outpatient program. Ideal candidates for a PHP are people suffering from drug or alcohol addiction who have completed an inpatient rehab program. Though, some patients may choose to start with a PHP due to family or work obligations.
This level of care provides 20-30 hours of service a week. During the patient’s time in treatment, they are monitored through therapeutic sessions, potentially given medicine to aid their recovery.
Addiction Treatment Services in Partial Hospitalization Programs
Like other treatment programs, patients are first evaluated so that an effective individualized plan for their recovery and treatment can be made. Psychologists, psychiatrists, or therapists may potentially diagnose the individual with a co-occurring disorder that may be present, adding another dynamic to one’s addiction.
To address one’s unique mental health conditions like alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, etc., a plan may include any of the following:
- Detox: Detox is generally done in an inpatient setting, especially for those with severe chemical dependencies, but it can potentially be done in a PHP setting as well. Patients may receive a medically supervised detox that includes medicines to combat dangerous side effects that come with alcohol or drug withdrawal and detox.
- Individual Therapy: One-on-one therapy sessions can help an addicted person understand the causes of their addictive behavior and give them the tools they need to change. Our psychotherapy sessions include both interpersonal therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy approaches to help heal the mind and establish productive behaviors.
- Group Therapy: Group therapy sessions may focus on specific skills or topics, helping addicted persons share their experiences and hear others’, giving them someone to relate to. Often, addicts feel alone in their condition and group therapy can give them a sense of belonging and potentially another support system that they can resonate with.
- Medication Management: Medication-assisted treatment is beneficial for those with intense cravings and powerful addictions, especially seen in alcoholics and those addicted to opioids. Other medications can also help manage protracted withdrawal symptoms that can last weeks to months.
- Holistic Treatments: Holistic treatment can include anything from exercise, healthy dieting, painting, yoga, music, enjoyable activities, etc. Holistic treatments are often overlooked as an effective method for addiction, but they are crucial in establishing healthy habits and bringing joy into the life of an addict outside of drugs.
Who Benefits From Partial Hospitalization Programs?
Partial hospitalization programs are best suited for people who have already completed a 30-day inpatient program. This way patients can gradually return to life outside of rehab, tapering away from 24-hour supervision. Much can be done in 30-days, but due to the nature of addiction, more time is usually needed for a successful recovery. Inpatient rehabilitation just lays important groundwork.
PHP is typically best suited for:
- People with obligations to work or family — as they can receive necessary addiction treatments while still addressing said obligations.
- People with less severe addictions — perhaps in their first attempt at recovery, may benefit from a PHP.
The cost of a partial hospitalization program over an inpatient program is another benefit that some consider when making their decision on a recovery program. PHPs can be much less expensive as they do not require room and board.
The price of treatment varies from person to person depending on one’s insurance policy, but many insurances cover partial hospitalization programs for addiction.
Who Doesn’t Benefit From a PHP?
Partial Hospitalization Programs are not for everyone. One’s environment at home and the severity of their addiction are two very important factors to consider when making a decision on a treatment program.
Those who don’t benefit include:
- People who live in problematic environments: Since a person must live at home during a PHP, they should have family members or roommates that support them. Any influence or triggers that may spark drug or alcohol use is extremely problematic when someone is trying to stay sober.
- People with previously failed recovery attempts: It takes a highly motivated individual in a PHP to abstain from drugs or alcohol. Because of this, people who have tried to get sober in the past but failed should not enroll in a PHP. A person who meets these criteria is more suited for inpatient rehab.
- People with severe chemical dependencies: It was mentioned earlier that detox can be done in PHPs, but this is rare. Those who seek treatment usually experience withdrawal symptoms that can be dangerous. These strong addictions make people far more prone to relapse, especially during the first month of recovery.
