What is Alcoholism?
Alcohol addiction, also known as alcoholism or Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), is considered a disease that affects individuals from all walks of life. It is defined by a lack of control over the amount of intake, frequency of use, and emotions when not drinking.

However, alcoholism isn’t simply a problem of willpower; Alcohol use disorders can negatively affect cognitive control and lead to a restructuring of the brain’s network of functional connections. And due to the nature of the disease and the social acceptance of alcohol use, most people with the disorder do not undergo alcohol treatment. Only about 8% of people with alcohol use disorder seek help through an alcohol treatment facility.
At Riverwalk Ranch, our Mansfield treatment center serving Dallas, Texas, provides comprehensive and evidence-based long-term treatment options that are individually tailored to each of our patients. Our vision is executed by leadership, industry trends, proven outcome measures, team members, and, most importantly, the needs of the client.
How to Get Help
Do you often feel like you have to drink? Do you have trouble controlling how much you drink? Do things not feel right when you don’t drink?
If you said yes to either of these questions, you may want to consider discussing your alcohol usage with your doctor. Come prepared to speak on your goals and think about whether you want to drink less or stop drinking entirely.
Admissions experts at Riverwalk Ranch in Mansfield, Texas can get you started with this discussion. We can also set an appointment to meet with our addiction specialized doctors to get an in-depth examination of your condition.

Alcohol Treatment Programs
The best treatment for you is going to be the one that best fits you. Take into consideration your goals as well as your situation.
Alcohol addiction treatment is sometimes thought of as a step-by-step program, though Riverwalk Ranch provides individually customized plans to meet each of our patient's unique goals.
Assessment for these plans starts when you make the call to our admissions team, evaluated and tailored during your first doctor appointment, then adapted to your progress throughout the treatment timeline.
Detoxification
Detoxifying the body from alcohol and other potentially abused drugs is the first step to recovery. Due to complications that occur during an alcohol withdrawal, it is always recommended that those physically dependent detox safely under professional supervision.
Clinicians will be able to help with agonizing symptoms of withdrawal, possibly prescribing medications to address serious systemic problems. During this time, staff becomes more familiar with the patient enabling a more focused treatment plan in later steps.
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment takes place at Riverwalk Ranch in Mansfield, serving people from Dallas and the wider DFW area. The appropriate length of stay and treatment plan depend on each person’s assessment and needs.

Partial Hospitalization
Before the recovering alcoholic goes out on their own, we recommended a gradual separation from inpatient rehab with partial hospitalization treatment. This level of care typically works with six hours a day, five days a week while allowing the patient to be sent home.
For some patients who need an alternative to fully immersive inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization can allow them thorough care while still being able to attend to life’s obligations. Patients get all the same services they would get in inpatient rehab. Some may consider partial hospitalization to be a more intensive form of outpatient care.
Outpatient Rehab
Outpatient rehabilitation is typically the last step in rehabilitation of alcoholism. During outpatient care, the patient lives at home and is asked to come to the treatment facility a few times a week for a few hours at a time. Here they continue fundamental psychotherapy such as cognitive therapy or family therapy.
Some people with less severe addictions or rigid business schedules may immediately follow a detox with outpatient rehab. While we recommend our patients go through comprehensive and thorough inpatient treatment, outpatient treatments still provide relapse prevention guidance and psychotherapy to address underlying problems related to addiction.
Understanding Alcohol Addiction
Not every person who drinks should be considered an alcoholic. Though, chances are, you’ve witnessed someone at some point in your life drink to their detriment. Whether it’s being consumed as beer, wine, or hard liquor, a consistent alcohol drinking habit can be a legitimate problem.
Alcohol use disorder has seen to cause a variety of changes to the brain and neurochemistry. An individual who is suffering from an alcohol addiction very well may not be able to control their actions.
Alcohol use disorder is capable of showing itself in a variety of ways. The overall severity of the addiction, how often the individual drinks and the amount of alcohol they consume can vary from person to person. Some people will drink heavily throughout the entire day. While on the other hand, some may binge drink for a short period and then stay sober for a while.
Assembled statistics on alcohol use in the U.S. by StatPearls state that:
- Roughly 138 million people 12 and older actively use alcohol.
- Forty-eight percent of that 138 million people had binge drank in the past 30 days.
- Of that 48%, 26% binge drank five or more times in the past 30 days, accounting for 12.5% of all U.S. alcohol users.
- More than 85,000 annual deaths are attributed to alcohol.
How Alcohol Use Affects You
Alcohol is primarily known to be a central nervous system (CNS) depressant, slowing down the mental and bodily processes of an individual. With just one glass of alcohol, consumers may experience a decrease in anxiety, stress, and a few other feelings.
Alcohol consumption is commonly associated with different kinds of social gatherings. Without it, some people might lack confidence in themselves or have trouble connecting with others. This peer pressure can lead to the start of a big problem.
Being able to tell when one has a drinking problem isn’t always so clear. It’s hard to differentiate a casual social activity between a reoccurring health issue. Alcohol should never be the center of social activity, but rather a supplement to it.
When the problem starts to become more clear, individuals may start to see alcohol affecting more than just their social lives.
Some of the more commonly seen negative consequences of alcohol use have been seen to include:
- Problems at work
- Financial difficulty
- Sudden signs of physical harm or illness
- Relationships becoming strained
Common Symptoms & Signs of Alcohol Abuse
If it is becoming noticeable that the alcohol addiction of someone you know is tending to get worse over time, it is crucial to be on the lookout for any of the early warning signs. Keep in mind that it may be a susceptible subject, and it is best to approach them in only positive and supportive ways.
If the warning signs are identified and, therefore, able to receive early treatment, that individual may be able to avoid the risks of experiencing any of the severe and sometimes dangerous consequences that are caused by this disease. Among the many symptoms that are linked to an alcohol use disorder, there are a good number of them that are more frequently seen than others.
Some of the more commonly recognized symptoms and warning signs to watch for include:
- Avoiding contact with friends and family members
- Becoming dependent on alcohol to function in ordinary everyday life
- Financial issues beginning to occur more often
- Increased feelings of depression, anxiety, or other emotional issues
- Only wanting to be in situations where alcohol is available while avoiding places where it is not
- Regularly drinking at inappropriate times such as first thing in the morning, at work, etc.
- Growing quantities and increased frequency of use
